Recently the Los Angeles City Council mapped out a sweeping transportation overhaul in an attempt to encourage commuters not to drive to work. L.A. has a deservedly poor reputation for traffic congestion and poor alternatives to driving. The project will add bike and bus lanes to many major roads in Los Angeles. According to author David Zahnister:
"Backers of the mobility plan call it an "aspirational" document, one that puts a new priority on road safety and expands the options for people who don't want to drive. Opponents say the city's own environmental analysis shows the plan will significantly increase traffic congestion by subtracting car lanes from an array of major boulevards." In my opinion it is wonderful a wonderful first step in reducing traffic, as bikers and bus riders take up less of the road. However I worry what will happen if drivers don't respond to incentives to ditch their cars and wind up driving in reduced lanes, increasing the congestion instead. Only time will tell.
